Orora Packaging Solutions is seeking a Jr. Designer to join our San Jose, CA team.  In this role you will collaborate and work closely with a team of highly skilled packaging designers, developing creative packaging solutions for our customers and generating high quality prototypes of those designs. Will also work closely with customer service, and/or planning depts. in executing small batch production orders on in-house prototyping equipment.   Under the mentorship of senior designers, future advancement opportunities are fostered by imparting knowledge and expertise via the custom design process.

This position report to the: Regional Design Manager/Northwest Region

Travel Requirement:  95+% in office/5% travel 

FLSA Status: Exempt

 

What You’ll be Responsible For in this Role

    • Manages in-house small batch production orders
      • Determines if requests are suitable for in house production
      • Creates sheet layouts (from existing designs) using CAD tools to maximize throughput on proto equipment
      • Creates/produces overpacking when needed.
      • Oversees and directs temp labor required to produce large/complex orders
      • Maintains equipment, works with equipment suppliers in performing regular preventative maintenance
      • Works with production planning team to ensures adequate stock levels are maintained for consumables
      • Maintains quality control of outputs  
    • Assists in designing packaging solutions in a wide variety of substrates, including but not limited to corrugated, folding carton, fabricated foam etc.
    • Participates in brainstorming activities with the design team using hand sketches, verbal cues, and design software
    • Assists in identifying suitable packaging materials/substrates for specific applications
    • Assists in creating high quality packaging mock-ups (physical protos and/or graphical renderings)
    • Assists in presenting final designs to stakeholders and company managers
    • Ensures packaging designs accurately represent the company’s brand and ethos.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two year (A.A. degree), equivalent technical degree, industrial technology, and/or relevant experience in the packaging industry.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly detailed, conceptual thinker, motivated by bringing delight to the customer through carefully considered packaging solutions
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple/complex projects concurrently
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)

Preferences

  • B.S. degree in relevant field of study (mechanical/product/packaging engineering etc.)
  • Hands-on ArtiosCAD, Pro-E, Autocad, Solidworks experience
  • 2yrs+ general industry experience (packaging manufacturing, distribution, and/or packaging design experience with a packaging end user or brand owner).
  • Previous experience operating/troubleshooting CNC equipment
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud
