Machine Operator – Flat Bed Die Cutters

 

Summary of the Role and How You'll Fit In


Responsible for operating and maintaining flat bed platen die cutters to convert corrugated board into cartons or inner packaging. This role includes setup, operation, troubleshooting, and cleanup while ensuring quality and efficiency. The operator will also be expected to follow safety protocols, perform routine maintenance, and recommend process improvements to optimize production performance.


What You’ll be Responsible For

 

Read and Interpret Job Specifications:

  • Review job specifications to determine necessary machine adjustments and material requirements.

 

Set-Up and Operation:

  • Perform die cutter set-up following proper setup techniques.
  • Coordinate with Machine Helpers and Forklift Operators to gather all required materials, including cutting dies and corrugated sheets.
  • Execute machine start-up, operate the machine at optimal capacity and speed, and ensure consistent product quality.

 

Material Handling:

  • Feed corrugated sheets into the machine as required.
  • Collaborate with Machine Helpers on the stacking process at the finished end, providing assistance or halting the machine as needed.

 

Quality and Maintenance:

  • Inspect all dies before and after each run, ensuring necessary repairs are completed before the next use.
  • Confirm all cutting die bolts are in place and securely fastened.
  • Monitor control panels and machine operations to identify defects or malfunctions.
  • Conduct visual inspections of box quality, including checking for loose liners, warp, accurate sizing, and correct print quality.
  • Examine anilox rolls for damage and perform minor maintenance, including cleanups.
  • Complete and submit maintenance work orders proactively, adhering to preventive maintenance practices.

 

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Complete accurate and timely reports, including Production Data, Machine Operational Status, Safety Data, and Quality Data.
  • Maintain thorough records of maintenance needs and production performance.

 

Training and Development:

  • Train and support Machine Helpers and Stackers with job duties and machine operations.
  • Cross-train on other machinery and rotate roles with Helpers as necessary to maintain operational flexibility.
  • Compliance and Safety:
  • Follow all applicable work instructions, quality procedures, and safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout procedures.
  • Adhere to production schedules, offering optimization recommendations to meet cost, quality, and service objectives.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, upholding housekeeping standards.

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor, demonstrating adaptability and teamwork.

 

What We’re Looking For
 

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Mathematical Proficiency:
    • Demonstrated ability to perform basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Measurement Skills:
    • Proficient in reading a tape measure with speed and accuracy.
  • Computer and Technology Skills:
    • Ability to use or quickly learn to use a computer terminal for data entry, machine operation, and reporting.
  • Reading and Comprehension:
    • Ability to read, understand, and follow work-related instructions, including production schedules, safety protocols, and quality procedures.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Ability to speak and understand English at a functional level to ensure effective communication of safety instructions, job specifications, and team coordination.
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving:
    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or graphic form.
    • Skilled in identifying and resolving practical problems by applying problem-solving techniques to one or more concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Workplace Aptitude:
    • Strong attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

 

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Industry Experience:
    • Previous work experience in the corrugated industry or related manufacturing environment.
  • Operational Skills:
    • Experience with machine setup, operations and troubleshooting.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with Flat Bed Due Cutting equipment and understanding of product quality standards.
