Position Summary

Freight Manager plays a critical role in the logistics and supply chain aspect of the organization, by overseeing the transportation of goods and materials.

 

The Freight Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing the transportation and distribution of goods and materials. Responsibilities include coordinating and optimizing the transportation of goods to ensure efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery. They ensure the efficient, cost-effective, and timely movement of products to meet customer demands while maintaining a high level of service and compliance with all relevant regulations.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Freight Operations: Oversee the day-to-day transportation operations, including coordinating shipments, tracking cargo, and managing carrier relationships.
  • Carrier Management: Manage relationships with carriers, freight brokers, and other transportation service providers. Providing input and participate in carrier selection.
  • Cost Control: Monitor and control transportation expenses, including freight rates, fuel costs, and shipping expenses, to ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including safety and environmental regulations, as well as international shipping requirements.
  • Documentation: Manage the preparation and accuracy of shipping documentation, including bills of lading, customs documents, and other required paperwork.
  • Collaboration w/Inventory Management and warehousing teams: Coordinate with inventory and warehouse teams on inbound vendor shipments and direct to customer shipments. 
  • Quality and Performance: Set and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the efficiency and performance of the transportation department.
  • Problem Solving: Address and resolve transportation issues, such as delays, damaged goods, and customer complaints, in a timely and effective manner.  Scorecard vendors.
  • Technology Utilization: Utilize transportation management software and other technology tools to streamline operations, track shipments, and enhance visibility.
  • Cost Analysis: Conduct cost-benefit analyses to identify areas for cost savings and process improvements in the transportation department.
  • Safety: Promote and enforce safety practices among transportation staff and monitor compliance with safety regulations.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and lead transportation staff, including logistics coordinators.
  • High level interaction/collaboration, coordination with warehouse leaders
  • Domestic and international shipping and customs.
  • Market Conditions: Stay up to date with current market conditions and trends in the freight field.
  • Any additional assigned responsibilities as required

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, and/or 5+ years of directly related experience in logistics, transportation, or supply chain management.
  • Proven experience in transportation and logistics management, with a strong understanding of industry regulations and best practices.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships internally and externally to include carriers and vendors.
  • Proficiency in transportation management software and other relevant technology tools.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of safety and compliance regulations in the transportation industry.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • SAP experience with WM and freight accounting
